MADRID – Hundreds of school children enjoyed another day at home as heavy snow and artic temperatures froze most of northern Spain.

Around 1,000 lorries could not get through the roads and had to stop until the cold snap lifted.

Police said at least 38 roads in mountainous areas of Burgos and Cantabria were closed and thousands of people in remote villages were cut off.

Authorities said 59 small villages in Palencia were totally cut off, leaving their  5,000 inhabitants isolated.

Bad weather warnings were issued again on Wednesday in Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country, La Rioja and Castilla y Leon.

Francisco Cadarso, head of the Spanish Meterological Institute, said temperatures would lift on Thursday but then plunge again at the weekend.
