Third police officer arrested for cocaine theft

25 August 2006

MADRID — A third police officer was arrested on Friday in connection with the theft of 20kgs of cocaine.

The low-ranking officer was arrested along with two other people in Madrid.

Two officers were arrested last week for the alleged theft of the drug which had been seized as part of a series of major drugs raids.

Police sources said 17kg was recovered when the two officers were detained last week, but 3kg was still outstanding.

The arrest of the third officer also led to the recovery of the missing 3kg in the home of a Romanian couple.

One Romanian man was detained in custody, while the police officer and a Romanian women were released on bail.

Police said they have now recovered all the cocaine which went missing from a police station in July.

Officers began an inquiry when it was realised the drugs had gone missing from a lorry which had been parked in a police station in Valencia.

Originally, the cocaine was seized in a series of raids in Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia.

In total, 513kg of the drug was recovered and 11 people were detained.
