Tenth death from Burgos warehouse blast

17 January 2005

BURGOS-A tenth man has died from his injuries sustained in the explosion which tore through an underground warehouse and killed nine other workers.

Ethmane Olud Ely, 34, from Mauritania, died from his injuries in hospital.

His death brings the number who were killed in the explosion last Thursday in the northern city of Burgos to ten.

Jose Luis Lopez Garachana, 48, died in hospital on Sunday from multiple injuries, medical sources said.

The funeral of Snr Garachana was being held on Monday in Burgos.

Two more workers are still in hospital suffering from injuries.

More than 5,000 people, including the minister of education Maria Jesus San Segundo, attended the funerals of the dead at Burgos Cathedral last week.

The cathedral was so full that some mourners could not be admitted to the service.

As three days of mourning for the dead ended on Sunday, investigators believe the blast happened when workers were handling a jerry can filled with fuel.

Seven workers, including six Spaniards and one Moroccan, were killed immediately.

An eighth man died from severe burns the day after the explosion.

The blast went off at 8:30 am in an area of the building storing machinery belonging to a construction company which makes bicycle paths.

The relatively new building in downtown Burgos -some 200 kilometres (125 miles) north of the capital Madrid-was not damaged in the blast and there was “no risk of collapse,” officials said.

A full investigation has begun to establish the cause of the accident, the worst work-related tragedy in Spain for ten years.
