Ten arrested in new civic corruption scandal

19 May 2006

LUGO — Ten people have been arrested in connection with an investigation into corruption in the local authority in Lugo.

The suspects, who include two Lugo provincial officials, were allegedly involved in the illegal awarding of public works contracts in the Galicia region.

Police raided the offices of the Senem Prieto engineering firm where they arrested a number of employees and seized files.

It is the latest civic corruption scandal to emerge in recent weeks.

This week, two deputies in Valencia filed a complaint against the opposition Popular Party spokesman Eduardo Zaplana.

They claimed he was involved in taking kick-backs from the developers of an amusement park called Tierra Mitica near Benidorm when he was regional premier in the 1990s.

Zaplana has filed for defamation.

In March, Marbella was enveloped in an anti-corruption inquiry involving councillors and property sales on the Costa del Sol.

Police arrested 30 people, including the mayor, the head of  urban planning and the local police, in connection with a multi-million euro graft scandal.

The council was dissolved by central government.
