Suspected ETA member arrested in France: Spain

Police in France on Wednesday arrested a suspected member of the armed Basque separatist group ETA after he stole a car, the Spanish interior ministry said.

Ibai Azcona Dominguez was detained in the southwestern French town of Hendaye where he lived, it said in a statement.

The 27-year-old was the subject of two arrest warrants, one of them on terrorism charges.

His arrest brings to 68 the number of suspected ETA members and collaborators detained by police this year in Spain and several other European nations, mostly in France.

ETA is considered a terrorist organisation by the European Union and United States and is held responsible for the deaths of 829 people in more than 40 years of violence for the independence of the Basque region of northern Spain and southwestern France.

The group has traditionally used France as a rear-base for attacks on Spain, but in recent years the two EU allies have strengthened cross-border police cooperation and cracked down on the group.
