BARCELONA – Police investigating the murder of a woman whose decapitated corpse was  found on a tourist beach in Barcelona Monday said it was not the work of an “expert surgeon”.

The body of a white woman, aged between 50-55, was found on the San Sebastian beach in Barceloneta on 5 June.

The case has shocked Spain, not least because of the gory nature of the victim’s death, but because the body was found on a popular tourist  beach in the heart of Barcelona.

The body, which was found in a sports bag, had no head or entrails, and parts of the legs were also missing.

The woman has not been identified.

Initially, police believed that the murder could have been the work of a “expert surgeon” who butchered the body with a scalpel because the cuts were so precise.

However, sources close to the investigation in the National Police said Monday they were now discounting this theory.

The reason was the way the body had been dismembered would not now suggest a trained surgeon was the killer.

Police admitted that  they are not discounting any theory but their main problem is that they have not been able to find out the identity of the victim.

DNA samples have not helped because she had no police record.

They have said that they now believe the murder was not a ritual killing as had originally been suggested.

Sources said that they also believe the murder was not a macabre joke on the part of a group of medical students – another of the more imaginative theories which have been suggested.
