MADRID — Specialised civil guard units dedicated to fighting illegal building is to go into action next year.
The Spanish daily El Pais reported on Monday 200 officers would work to put a stop to high-profile cases of graft around the country.
The civic corruption scandal which led to the dissolution of Marbella city council and other cases in Murcia, Valencia and Madrid, have led to the setting up of the new unit.
These scandals have been powered by Spain’s building boom, leading to accusations of politicians taking bribes to pass construction projects around the country.
Some of these have been in protected areas like natural parks.
Hundreds of expats have been left worried their properties would be affected by accusation hundreds of properties were illegally built.
But until now there has been no unit dedicated to investigating and prosecuting those behind building crimes.
