SALOU – Spanish police have arrested a Belgian man facing a 30-year prison sentence is his home country for  raping a six-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy, authorities said Friday.

The Belgian, identified only as Jean-Pol M, 49, was detained earlier this week at a restaurant where he worked in the Mediterranean resort town of Salou, which is popular with families visiting the nearby Port Aventura theme park.

According to police, he fled to Spain last year after being found guilty and sentenced to 30 years in jail for the rapes, which took place between October 2002 and February 2003. A Belgian court issued an international arrest warrant in January which Interpol delivered to the Spanish National Police office in Tarragona.

Police transferred the former fugitive to Madrid where he is to await extradition to Belgium.
