Spanish missionary murdered in Burkina Faso

VATICAN CITY- A Spanish missionary was murdered at a school in  Burkina Faso, West Africa, the Vatican’s Fides news agency reported Tuesday.

Brother Ignacio Garcia Alonso, of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, was killed on 6 February at around noon in his office.

Brother Alonso was principal at the school run by the De La Salle Order, in the town of Bobo Dioulasso.

Several individuals apparently entered his office and attacked and killed him with machetes.

The attackers fled and no arrests have been made.

Garcia Alonso was discovered hours later by several colleagues.

The 63-year-old missionary was well known in Burkina Faso. He spent 40 years as a missionary in Morocco, Niger and Burkina Faso.

The brother will be laid to rest Tuesday in Toussiana, some 50 kilometres (31 miles) from Bobo Dioulasso.
