OVIEDO — French journalist Jean Daniel, founder and editor of the Le Nouvel Observateur weekly, was named Wednesday the winner of the 2004 Prince of Asturias Prize for communications and humanities.
Daniel, born in Blida, Algeria, in 1920, was selected by a jury headed by Spanish professor Manuel Olivencia.
Le Nouvel Observateur is a highly-respected news magazine.
Also on the panel was Polish writer and journalist Ryszard Kapuscinski, last year’s winner in the same category, and several members of the Spanish press.
The prestigious award is named after the title borne by the heir to the Spanish throne and carries a cash grant of EUR 50,000 (some USD 65,000).
