Spanish matador seriously injured after goring

A Spanish matador was seriously injured on Sunday after being gored during a contest in the northern city of Bilbao, according to a bullfighting website.

Sergio Aguilar was gored through his cheek and left thigh and lost considerable amounts of blood before being transferred to a hospital in the city, mundotoro.com reported.

The 2010 bullfighting season has been notable for the high number of injuries among top matadors.

The most spectacular involved Julio Aparicio, who narrowly escaped death in May when he was speared by a bull below his jaw, with the horn exiting from his mouth.

In July, Catalonia became the first region in mainland Spain to outlaw the centuries-old tradition.
