Spanish gold hoard to be auctioned in NY

A mountain of 37,895 Spanish coins, many of them solid gold, will be sold as a single lot at auction in New York in March, Sotheby's auctioneers announced Thursday.

The hoard, assembled at the turn of the 20th century by wealthy American collector Archer Huntington, is the most important collection of historic Spanish coins outside of Spain, Sotheby’s said.

It is expected to sell for between $25 million and $35 million.

With everything from rare Roman coins to pieces from Spain’s Golden Age of conquest and cultural achievement in the 15th to 17th centuries, the “collection represents something truly remarkable,” David Redden of Sotheby’s said.

“In a very real and tangible way, the nearly 38,000 coins provide a comprehensive view of world history,” he said in a statement.
