11 February 2008

MADRID – Even without heavy hitters Rafa Nadal and David Ferrer, Spain had no difficulty getting past host country Peru in its first Davis Cup round, winning its first three matches without dropping a set.

Spain’s doubles team of Nicolás Verdasco and Feliciano López gave the team its third win and its quarterfinals slot on Saturday beating Luis Horna and Iván Miranda, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 in less than three hours of play.

On Friday, Spain’s second racket Nicolás Almagro opened the series by beating Peru’s third, Matías Silva, 6-3, 7-5, 6-0, followed by Spain’s number one player Tommy Robredo’s 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 win over Iván Miranda.

Germany, which beat South Korea three matches to one, will be Spain’s quarterfinal opponent in mid-April.
