Spain's Deputy Prime Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba is set to lead the ruling Socialist Party in general elections next year after the country's premier backed him as his successor, a senior party official announced Friday.

Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez “Zapatero has expressed his wish that Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba be the candidate of the Socialist Party,” the party’s deputy secretary general Jose Blanco told a news conference.

He said Rubalcaba, 59, who is interior minister and one of the most powerful figures in government, also has the support of regional party leaders who met Zapatero earlier Friday.
