Spain’s best-kept secret

12 May 2004

MADRID – The gown Crown Prince Felipe’s fiancée, Letizia Ortiz, will wear for their wedding continues to be Spain’s best-kept secret, despite the media’s efforts to reveal details of the dress ahead of time, EFE reported Wednesday.

The 31-year-old former television anchor chose renowned Spanish designer Manuel Pertegaz to design the gown she will wear on her 22 May wedding day.

According to the fashion designer, the ivory-white wedding gown will have “a modest, not at all generous” neckline and sleeves, but no buttons.

Pertegaz was the couture darling of Spanish high society during the 1960s, and his creations were worn by Ava Gardner, Audrey Hepburn and US First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy.

For the past 25 years, Pertegaz’s design studio has been located on the second floor of a modernist building in Barcelona.

The future princess has been to Pertegaz’s atelier for several fittings, according to reports from photo-journalists who have stationed themselves outside the building.

For his part, the royal groom will wear his military dress uniform, which consists of a blue army jacket, trousers with white collar, cuffs and gloves and black shoes.
