Spain court acquits pianist who disturbed neighbour: reports

A court in Spain on Tuesday acquitted a pianist who prosecutors wanted jailed for disturbing a neighbour with her playing, media reported.

Laia Martin, 28, was prosecuted for noise pollution and psychological harm by her former neighbour Sonia Bosom who said she had suffered anxiety from hearing 40 hours of piano practice a week between 2003 and 2007.

Public prosecutors had demanded a six-year jail term and a ban from playing the piano for Martin, who was a music student at the time in the northeastern town of Puigcerda, and is now a professional pianist.

The court in nearby Girona acquitted Martin, along with her parents who were prosecuted as accomplices, Catalonia regional public television reported on Tuesday.

The judge noted that the family had taken measures to soundproof the room where Martin practised in a rented apartment and expressed disapproval that the case had gone as far as a trial, the report said.
