Slim pickings for Ikea ram-raiders

11 December 2007

MADRID – Ram-raiders staged a daring robbery in Madrid on Sunday, by driving through the window of a packed Ikea store and firing several shots into the air. The raid, which lasted only 75 seconds, saw the thieves make off with just EUR 5,000.

The events took place at 7.30pm at the Vallecas branch of the Swedish furniture store, located in the southeast of the capital.

According to a press release issued by Ikea yesterday, “it was just seconds before the police arrived, given that at the time they were patrolling the area.”

The four thieves quickly left the scene, “thanks to the quick intervention by the police and the strict security measures at the store,” according to the press release, fleeing in the same vehicle they had used to crash through the store window. No one was hurt during the robbery.
