MADRID – The search for a British climber missing in Spain for a week was called off Tuesday.
Bill Sutherland, 50, from Tonbridge, in southern England, disappeared while climbing in the Picos de Europa mountains on 28 May.
His brother, David Sutherland, has returned to Britain after the search for the missing climber was called off.
A search by mountain rescue teams has not revealed what happened.
“There are obviously doubts that, if Bill is still up there, he is alive,” said David Sutherland.
His brother, who is described as an “expert climber”, was visiting Spain with a British climbing club when he left their base in Potes to climb in nearby Fuente De.
Friends and family have tried to reach him on his mobile phone but he has not been seen or heard from since.
