Scottish tourist dies after row with boyfriend

13 April 2004

PALMA – Police have opened an investigation after a Scottish tourist was found dead  in her holiday apartment on the island of Majorca Tuesday.

The body of the 49-year-old woman was found early Tuesday at the apartment in the resort of Santa Ponsa.

Police said she had a stormy argument with her boyfriend the night before.

The next morning, he told police he discovered his girlfriend’s body.

He also claimed he had left the flat after the row and went to sleep elsewhere.

Police sources said the woman’s body did not have any signs of violence and detectives believe she could have died of natural causes or suffered a fatal heart attack.

But they were questioning the boyfriend, who has not been arrested.

The couple were holidaying on the island. The woman has not been named.

A post-mortem may reveal whether the woman could have been suffering from some kind of illness or took an overdose of some form of medication.

Police are keeping an open mind about the case and await the result of the post-mortem.

Isabel Llinas, director of the Balearic Institute for Women, said it could have been a case of domestic violence.

She said a minute’s silence will be held Wednesday as a mark of respect.
