Prince in Panama as president sworn in

1 September 2004

PANAMA CITY – Spain’s Crown Prince Felipe was attending the swearing-in ceremony Wednesday of Panama’s new president Martin Torrijos.

Felipe and his wife, Princess Letizia, will attend Torrijos’ ceremony in the capital.

The new president is scheduled to hold office for the next five years.

Shortly after his arrival in Panama, the prince met with the outgoing president Mireya Moscoso at the presidential palace, conveying to her a message from King Juan Carlos in which he congratulated the Panamanian people for their successful elections and transfer of power.

Prince Felipe then met with Torrijos, 41, in a hotel in the capital and delivered another message from his father, who expressed hope for the strengthening of relations between their countries.

After the meetings, the prince and princess attended a luncheon with several important political figures at the Spanish Embassy in Panama City.
