MADRID – A huge child pornography gang with links between five countries and marketing 27,000 illegal images was smashed by Spanish police, sources said Friday.
Some of the photographs involved babies, investigators revealed.
Twenty-four people were arrested in Spain and in Latin America.
The gang was thought to have supplied pornography to at least 1,000 users.
The operation – codenamed Global – involved police in Mexico, Peru, Chile and Colombia.
But it was coordinated by a specialised cyber police squad based in Madrid.
Eighteen suspects were arrested in Spain and others in different Latin American countries.
The operation has been underway since last December and specifically targeted child pornography in Latin America.
Those arrested were trying to sell images or videos of children or even babies involved in sexual acts.
Police seized 27,000 photographs, 500 videos, 600 sexually explicit messages and 3,000 web addresses for child pornography.
Spanish police made arrests at 22 addresses in Alicante, Barcelona, Cáceres, Cádiz, Ceuta, Guipúzcoa, Madrid, Málaga, Murcia, Tarragona and Valencia.
The eighteen arrested were aged between 18 and 49.
All were Spanish apart from four Latin-Americans.
