Pope urges Royals to set example

VATICAN CITY — Pope John Paul II has urged the Prince and Princess of Asturias Monday to set an example to other Spaniards.

The pope, who received the couple at the Vatican, said their “prominence in Spanish society can become an example to so many families in that dear country”.

The pope spoke to Crown Prince Felipe de Borbon and his bride, Letizia Ortiz, adding that the establishment of a new family “is always a great event.”

Speaking in Spanish, he added: “It’s (a great event) for the spouses, whose love becomes richer and stronger with divine grace. It’s also a great event for the respective families and for society, since a faithful life together that does not end brings new hope and promises of life,” the pope said.

With these words, the elderly pontiff emphasised his defence of the sacrament of holy matrimony and the institution of the family.

The pope expressed his pleasure at meeting the royal couple shortly after they celebrated “the sacrament of matrimony,” and said he respected them for wanting to visit him early in their married life.

Following a tradition of Spain’s Royal House, the Prince and Princess of Asturias visited the Vatican Monday for the pope’s blessing following their marriage 22 May.

The couple also met with Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano, and later visited St. Peter’s Basilica.
