Police name suspected killer of Spanish tourist

16 December 2005

MEXICO CITY — A manhunt was underway across Mexico for the alleged killer of a Spanish tourist whose semi-naked body was found in a tourist resort.

Antonio Burwell Vales, who is understood to be Spanish, was a friend of Martha Toullat Vallverde.

Her body was found with that of her Italian friend, Matias Mezzetti, in a Mexican tourist resort.

Police in five Mexican states are hunting Vales.

Vallverde was discovered in the resort of Tulum, about 130 kilometres south of Cancun on Mexico’s Caribbean coast.

It appeared the 26-year-old, from Barcelona, and Mezzetti, also 26,  had been the victims of a violent attack.

Both were found half dressed and had apparently been attacked with blunt weapons.

They had been in Mexico since 18 November and had been staying at a hotel in Tulum since 2 December.

Both victims were seen together for the last time on Thursday last week.

Eighteen murder squad detectives are working on the case.

Their bodies have been returned to their respective countries.
