Police identifyMadrid bombers

16 March 2004

MADRID – Spanish police have reportedly identified six Moroccans whom they believe carried out the Madrid bomb attacks that killed 201 people.

The Spanish newspaper El Pais quotes security sources as saying that one of the six has already been arrested.

He is said to have been recognised by two survivors just before the blasts.

Jamal Zougam, 30, who was named by the newspaper, was said to have links to the terrorist group responsible for last year’s bomb attack in Casablanca in which 45 died, and to Al-Qaeda.

Apart from the six which have been linked to the attacks, four other men have been detained in connection with the bomb attacks.

Two other Moroccans, Mohamed Bekkali, 31, and Mohamed Chaoui, 34, were arrested along with two Indians.

The Indians were named as Vinay Kohly and Suresh Kumar. The Indians were said to have sold mobile phones used to detonate the bombs in Madrid.

As suspicion mounts that Islamic militants were involved in Thursday’s attacks, European countries are holding emergency security meetings this week.
