Pickaxe killer shot by police after rampage

18 December 2007

MADRID – A man who killed his sister with a pickaxe and stabbed three neighbours with a knife was shot dead by Civil Guard officers in a small village in Spain’s western Extremadura region on Monday.

The man, 37-year-old José Manuel Aguedo, was shot at around 10am yesterday when he attempted to attack the officers who had been called to his sister’s home in Oliva de la Frontera, about 100 kilometres south of Badajoz. Inside the house on the outskirts of the village, the officers found the body of Aguedo’s sister.

The man had also injured three villagers outside the home with a knife, including a 75-year-old woman. Aguedo, who was nicknamed The Good One by villagers, had apparently spent Sunday night on a drunken rampage around town during which he had killed several dogs and turkeys.
