Pensioner jailed for strangling sick wife

9 February 2004

MALAGA – A pensioner was jailed for 17 years Monday for strangling his 76-year-old wife who was suffering from Parkinson’s Disease.

The 75-year-old, who had no criminal history, killed his feeble wife with the belt of his dressing-gown.

Her condition had deteriorated and he began to have to care for her round the clock.

The husband claimed he felt he could no longer manage. The murder took place on 4 February 2003.

Afterwards, the husband attempted to make it appear as if the woman had killed herself. But he was arrested shortly afterwards.

Meanwhile, three men were arrested in Zaragoza for attacking three women in separate attacks in under two hours, authorities said Monday.

The attacks came as another woman was in intensive care in Malaga Monday after being thrown from the window of her flat by her boyfriend.

And in Corboda, more than 1,000 people attended the funeral Sunday of a 25-year-old woman who was stabbed to death allegedly by her husband Friday.

Sixty-eight women were killed last year in attacks by their husbands or boyfriends.

A conference on the issue of domestic violence in Madrid last week found attacks had risen by 50 percent last year.

It is a controversial political issue in Spain, despite the country’s reputation as a macho society.

The scale of the problem was highlighted by the attacks over the weekend.

In Zaragoza, a 48-year-old man was arrested at 7pm Sunday night for attacking his ex-wife .

An hour-and-a-half later, at 8.35pm, a 31-year-old man was arrested in the same city for attacking his partner.

At 8.50pm a 26-year-old man was arrested for attacking a woman, thought to be his girlfriend.

Meanwhile, in Magala, in southern Spain, the 27-year-old woman who was pushed out of the window of her home by her boyfriend was in a serious condition in the Carlos Haya Hospital.

The boyfriend has been arrested.

On Sunday, more than one thousand people attended the funeral of Laura Navarro, 25, in Corboda.

She was stabbed to death on Friday and her husband has been arrested in connection with the murder.
