LOS ANGELES – Pan’s Labyrinth won three Oscars for best make-up, best artistic direction and best photography at the Academy Awards.
But it missed out on the top prize for a non-English speaking film, which went to the German film, The Life of Others.
Pan’s Labyrinth, directed by Mexican Guillermo del Toro, received the honours at the Oscar ceremony early on Monday.
The film, which is part-fantasy based in the Spanish Civil War, was nominated for six Oscars in all.
Guillermo Navarro, winner of the best photography Oscar, said: “It is tough not winning the best non-English speaking film because it was about the work we all did and we thought we did a good job.”
Penelope Cruz, who was nominated for an Oscar as best actress for her role in Volver by Pedro Almodovar, lost out to Helen Mirren who won the award for her role in The Queen, about the British monarch following the death of Princess Diana.
