Paedophile gang defends sex abuse on Internet

21 October 2005

SEVILLE — Spanish police have arrested a paedophile gang which was using the Internet to aggressively defend child pornography.

Seven people have been arrested across Spain and two children have been taken into police care.

The gang were not just using the Internet to show images of abused children, but defending their crimes.

Commandante Juan Salom, head of the Guardia Civil unit which specialises in Internet crime, said the number of arrests did not reflect the “intensity and profile” of the offenders.

He said they were using the Internet to defend or even try and excuse for child sex abuse.

The police operation has been underway since May.

Seven men were arrested in Alicante, Murcia, La Coruña, Oviedo, Guadalajara and Madrid.

Salom also said a gang of Romanian fraudsters, associated with the paedophiles were arrested.

They sold luxury cars, fake credit cards and used a new level of ruthlessness to carry out their crimes.

They threatened victims with execution and paid henchmen with drugs.
