Canet de Mar — One person died and 15 others were injured when a fire broke out early Tuesday at a retirement home, firefighters said.
Four people were in a critical condition after the fire at Canet de Mar, near Barcelona, in Catalonia, north-east Spain.
The fire, the cause of which remains uncertain, started at 2.21am (0121 GMT).
It started on the third floor of the San Roc Residence and was brought under control by firefighters after about an hour.
The 25 people on the floor were evacuated with difficulty because of their advanced age.
Firefighters said a discarded cigarette may have been the cause of the fire.
