MADRID – Old tyres are to be used to improve road surfaces across Spain.
A government regulation, to come into force, will mean 35 million tyres will be ground up and mixed with asphalt then laid on the roads.
The idea is to make roads less noisy, more ‘elasticated’ and resistant. They will also allow water to filter through better than the traditional surface.
The government also wants to make better use of the 300,000 tyres which are thrown away every year in Spain.
