No room at Austrian inn for Jewish family

Published on 18/05/2009

Vienna — A Jewish family from Vienna were refused a room in a hotel in a picturesque holiday resort in the Austrian Alps on account of their religion, local newspapers reported last week

The family sent an e-mail enquiry about booking a room in a hotel in Serfaus, in the west of Austria, but the owners refused, saying in an e-mailed reply that they were "no longer willing to take in Jewish guests because of bad experiences in the past," the Tiroler Tageszeitung reported.

The incident drew condemnation, not only from the Jewish community but also from the mayor of Serfaus and the head of the local tourist office, who slammed the hotelier’s response as "unacceptable."
