Nine detained for explosive robberies in Madrid

3 September 2008

MADRID — The police and Civil Guard have detained nine suspects aged between 17 and 22 that formed part of a "ramraiding" gang  suspected to have stolen up to a million euros in merchandise in Madrid and Andalusia.

Officials say that the youths are suspected of having taken part in 81 crimes, most of which were carried out with the help of explosives, violence or the intimidation of victims.

In July, inhabitants of northern Madrid were awoken by a thunderous early morning roar when thieves broke into a Jaguar car dealer with explosives. The robbery took less than 15 minutes.

A Gucci store in the same city was raided  in a similar fashion in early July.
