HUELVA — A mayor who was shot dead by waiting gunmen had been threatened before, police said on Monday.
The body of Miguel Grima, 50, was found at the bottom of a steep bank with a number of gunshot wounds in his chest.
There were signs he had been attacked with blunt weapons then shot before his body was hidden.
The Popular Party mayor of Fago, a small town of only 30 inhabitants in Huesca, in northern Spain, had previously had his brakes tampered with and the orchard in his orchard had been poisoned, party sources claimed.
Police would not confirm these claims.
Grima’s car was found about 30km from Fago at the weekend.
Party allies of the murdered mayor said he could have been murdered by enemies who included local hunters or those who had fallen out with him over property deals.
Regional Popular Party boss Antonio Torres said Grima was not a controversial mayor.
“This is a savage murder and this is unjustifiable,” he said.
