Moroccan denies any role in Madrid bombings

MADRID — A Moroccan arrested in Serbia and extradited to Spain early this week denied all allegations regarding his involvement in the Madrid train bombings that killed nearly 200 people.

Abdelmajid Bouchar wound up two-and-a-half days of questioning by National Court Judge Juan del Olmo, who is heading the probe into the coordinated attacks by Islamic extremists on four commuter trains that also wounded some 1,500 people.

Bouchar, who was arrested in July in Belgrade, is charged with 191 counts of murder with the aggravating factor of terrorism, as well as with attempted murder and possession of explosives.

He allegedly was the lookout at an apartment building in the Madrid suburb of Leganes on 3 April, 2004 when police were closing in on the building where the suspected bombers were holed up.

The Moroccan is said to have alerted the seven men inside, who blew themselves up as police entered the premises, also killing one officer.

Bouchar fled the scene.

Judiciary sources said the Moroccan was “very evasive” in his answers to Del Olmo’s questions.
