Moratinos attacks Royal visit to Gibraltar
25 June 2004
MADRID — Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos attacked the planned visit to Gibraltar of Princess Anne, daughter of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth, it was reported Friday.
Anne, the Princess Royal, was scheduled to take part Monday at ceremonies marking 300 years of British domination over the tiny colony.
Moratinos told the senate foreign affairs commission that the visit “is not news that we consider to be positive to re-launch a dialogue with the British authorities about Gibraltar”.
Gibraltar is a constant source of irritation for Spain, which lays claim to the territory on the southern Spanish coast.
It was captured by Britain in July 1704 and ceded to it by the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713.
