Mexico to extradite six ETA suspects

1 February 2005

MEXICO CITY – The Mexican government has confirmed its decision that it will extradite to Spain six Basques suspected of having ties to the Basque separatist group ETA, their lawyer Barbara Zamora said.

The Mexican Foreign Ministry ordered the extradition of the six on July 30, but execution of the order was halted because of an appeal lodged on behalf of the group.

Zamora said the appeal had not been rejected, but promised to lodge another one, this time with the Mexican Supreme Court. If that happens, the extradition will be halted again.

The six — five men and one woman — were arrested in July 2003.

They admit supporting the Basque nationalist cause but deny ties to ETA, which has been
responsible for numerous bombings in Spain.

The extradition was requested by Spanish activist judge Baltazar Garzon.
