Man who shot driver gives himself up in Portugal

23 January 2006

SEVILLE — The man who shot dead a driver who ran over his daughter has handed himself into police.

Ricardo Suárez Álvarez, who admits murdering Gaspar Garcia minutes after he ran over his daughter on 8 January, gave himself up in Portugal.

He told police he had been drunk at the time of the accident and thought his  daughter had been killed.

In fact, she was only slightly injured.

Suarez said he gave himself up because he regretted his actions.

Suárez told a Spanish television channel that the only justification he had for the killing was because he was drunk.

He said he had apologised to the family of Garcia.

After the killing, he went on the run and finally gave himself up to the police near Oporto.

Garcia knocked down a group of girls in a road. None were seriously hurt.
