Man, 60, in knife attack on pensioner

4 February 2004

LAS PALMAS – A man in his 60s slashed the neck of a woman in the street before trying to kill himself with the same knife, police said Wednesday.

The incident happened just after 8.30am Wednesday in Las Palmas, in Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, according to witnesses.

According to the same sources, the two injured people were both around 60 years old.

It is thought that they were a couple.

They were still alive despite their injuries and were taken to hospital on the holiday island.

The man is thought to have cut the woman’s neck twice with the knife.

Then he cut his own neck three or four times more seriously with the same knife.

The woman had put her hands to her throat to try to stop the blood.

But at the same time, the man stopped other people from trying to help her, according to witnesses.

Meanwhile, police in Majorca found the body Wednesday of a 34-year-old woman who had been missing since Saturday.

Isabel Ferrer is thought to have been attacked by her partner, who has been arrested by police.
