Madrid Zoo pouches record for first Koala birth

21 December 2007

MADRID – After six months in her mother’s pouch and therefore unbeknown to visitors of Madrid Zoo, the first baby koala to be born in Spain was presented in public on Thursday.

The mother, Kalondra, gave birth on 12 May to a tiny bean-sized cub, which then crawled into her pouch to suckle and grow.

At around six months of age, koala cubs begin to make sporadic ventures into their surroundings.

The zoo is asking children to choose between Uluru, Kurunda and Noosa as a name for the new arrival.
