Madrid loses out to Seville for Davis Cup final

28 September 2004

SEVILLE – The Davis Cup final between Spain and the United States will take place in Seville, the Spanish Tennis Federation announced Tuesday.

The final, running from 3-5 December will be staged at the Olympic stadium of La Cartuja in the Andalucian city, with a capacity of around 22,000 spectators.

The Davis Cup has gripped Spain since teenager Rafael Nadal beat France in the semi-final in a dramatic game.

La Cartuja is generally used for athletics or soccer and staged the 2003 UEFA Cup final between Porto and Celtic.

The decision comes as a major blow to Madrid, who wanted to host the final to boost the city’s bid for the 2012 Olympics.

Madrid’s high altitude effectively ruled the capital out, however, with Spain’s three-man coaching team deciding that the conditions would suit the big-serving Americans more than the host nation.
