Madrid bomb suspect to be tried in Morocco

29 January 2008

MADRID – Acting on a Spanish request, Morocco yesterday arrested Abdelillah Hriz, alleged to be one of the perpetrators of the 11 March 2004 bombings in Madrid. Hriz will go on trial in Morocco, the first time that the country has tried one of its nationals for a terrorist act committed in Spain.

Seven other suspects of the train bombings, which killed 192, blew themselves up in Leganés, near Madrid, in April 2004. Hriz, however, was located in Morocco, where he settled after living in Barcelona and Turkey. Until now he had been left alone because Morocco does not extradite its citizens.

But an investigation led by Spain’s High Court yielded Hriz’s genetic profile at the site of the attacks. Spain has not ruled out putting Hriz on trial here as well, and if the suspect were to leave Moroccan soil, an arrest warrant would be issued.
