Madrid and Tunis in talks on fight on terrorism

23 November 2004

TUNIS- Spanish and Tunisian military officials are holding talks this week in Tunisia on security in the Mediterranean, officials said.

The TAP news agency said Admiral Zarago Soto, the chief of staff of the Spanish navy, met Monday with Tunisian Defense Minister Hedi Mhenni to discuss bilateral military cooperation.

Soto’s visit comes two months after Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero met with Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali to discuss security matters and the fight against terrorism.

The man believed to have coordinated the 11 March attacks in Madrid that killed 191 people is of Tunisian origin and an April 2002 attack against a synagogue in the Tunisian resort island of Djerba has been claimed by the Al-Qaeda terror network.
