Lucia and Alejandro most popular names

15 August 2007

MADRID (EFE) – Lucia and Alejandro are the most popular names among Spanish parents today, the latest data from the National Statistics Institute showed on Wednesday.

More babies were called Lucia and Alejandro in 2006 than any other names – 9,454 Lucias and 7,581 Alejandros.

Baby-naming reflects changing fashions. Twenty-five years ago, Catholic names like Maria and David topped the naming charts.

In Spain, though, popular names vary according to regions. In the Basque region, Iker and Irati have replaced Mikel and Leire, popular names a quarter of a century ago.

In Catalonia, Laia and Marc have overtaken once-popular Jordi and Laura.
