Los galacticos to hit Hollywood?

9 November 2004

MADRID- Tinsel town is about to arrive at one of Spain’s footballing shrines as David Beckham and the other stars of Real Madrid appear poised to sign-up for a Hollywood film.

The Spanish daily El Pais reported how Beckham, Zidane and Raul – known as ‘los galacticos’ – are about to sign-up for a new film called Goal.

After tortuous negotiations with FIFA, UEFA, Real Madrid and the players themselves, the producers behind the film have almost secured their agreement to start filming.

The players themselves will play parts in the film, which tells the story of a young player from the poorest parts of Los Angeles, who finds fame with Newcastle United, a team in the English Premier League.

Goal, which is to be filmed in three parts, then translates to Madrid, when the player, signs for ‘los blancos’ or Real Madrid.

Real Madrid are said to see the film as a way of getting their name known in the US, where football is very much a minority sport, despite the staging of the World Cup there in 1994.

Former Barcelona star Patrick Kluivert, who now plays for Newcastle United and his team mates, Kieron Dyer and Alan Shearer, as well as teenage Manchester United star Wayne Rooney , have already signed-up for the film.

The main character is to be played by one of Hollywood’s rising stars, Diego Luna.

The film will also be directed by Danny Cannon, who worked with Sylvester Stallone on Judge Dredd and Ray Liotta on Phoenix.
