Lorry blast kills two, injures three

9 March 2004

CASTELLON – A lorry carrying dangerous chemicals crashed into a car and exploded Tuesday killing two people and injuring three more, emergency services said.

The lorry was carrying a load of ammonium nitrate which caused the explosion immediately after the collision.

The crash happened on the N234 near Barracas near Castellón in north-east Spain.

The injured received medical attention at the scene of the crash. One was taken to the Hospital Comarcal in Sagunto, 56 kilómetres away.

It was not known how seriously they had been hurt.

The two fatalities have not been identified.

Sources from the Centre for Coordination of Emergencies in Castellon said that the chemicals which were being transported by the lorry were “very dangerous”.
