MADRID – The Madrid region has a higher life expectancy than the average for all European countries, a new health study finds.
The average life expectancy for women living in the region is nearly 85, while for a man life expectancy can vary by as much as seven years depending on which district he resides in. A man living in the upscale barrio of Salamanca can expect to live almost 79 years, while a male resident of Orcasur, one of the capital’s poorest neighbourhoods, will barely reach 72 years of age on average.
The report by Madrid City Hall shows that the Salamanca man competes with Japanese and Swiss men for sheer longevity, while the Orcasur man is no better off than Mexicans or Salvadorans.
Differences were attributed to unemployment, education and income levels, in that order.
