Leicester players ‘will face trial’
16 April 2004
LONDON – Three British footballers will have to stand trial in a Spanish court over allegations they sexually abused two women, it was reported Friday.
Keith Gillespie, 29, Frank Sinclair, 32, and Paul Dickov, 31, who play for Premiership club Leicester City, will go before a professional jury of three judges over the rape allegations made by the women.
The allegations came after the footballers were staying at the exclusive La Manga training camp in Cartagena, south-east Spain, in March.
Britain’s Sun newspaper reported Friday that a well-placed legal source in Cartagena said: “The decision is as good as made that this case will go to trial.”
Officials at Leicester City said they were “surprised” at the news and had been given no official notification.
The players spent a week in custody after a night out on a trip to the La Manga resort before they were allowed to fly home on bail.
Kenyan-born friends Beatrice Wanjiro, 31, and Martha Wilbert, 37, are thought to be claiming Sinclair attacked them.
All three men deny the charges but face up to 12 years in jail if convicted.
