Latin youths in Majorca street battle

13 August 2007

PALMA DE MAJORCA – Spanish police detained 14 mostly Latin American young people after about 70 youths staged a street battle overnight in Palma, capital of the tourist island of Majorca, police said on Monday.

Ten of the detainees were Ecuadorians. The others were nationals of Colombia, the Dominican Republic and Spain.

Eight of the detainees belonged to Los Netas, one of the Latin American street gangs that have caused concern to police in recent years. Three of the detainees were younger than 18.

Two people, including one of the detainees, sustained slight injuries during the street battle, which was waged with bottles, belts and knives near a discotheque.

In January, hundreds of Spanish youths clashed with Latin Americans and riot police in Alcorcon near Madrid.
