King meets new Spain’s rulers

5 April 2004

MADRID – King Juan Carlos began to receive representatives of the new Spanish parliament Monday.

In a formal process which will see the start of the new Socialist administration, the King sees all the leaders of the new political parties.

He began by meeting the head of the smallest party in parliament, Uxue Barkos, who represents a coalition of nationalists from the Basque Country.

Other smaller regional party heads will be received by the monarch in the Zarzuela Palace.

The King will finally see Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, Spain’s new prime minister, Wednesday.

Zapatero, whose PSOE party does not have an absolute majority, seems likely to get support from the left-wing IU party to win important votes.

King Juan Carlos will complete the formalities by receiving  the new president of the Spanish Congress or upper house.
