Javier Bardem returns to the Oscar shortlist

23 January 2008

MADRID – Javier Bardem will vie for an Oscar for his role in the Coen brothers’ No Country for Old Men. The Spanish actor, who was nominated once before for his role in Julian Schnabel’s Before Night Falls, stands to win an Academy Award for best supporting actor.

"It is an honour for me to receive this nomination, which is an acknowledgement of the work and talent of all those creators and professionals who came before me and inspired me to do a better job all these years," said Bardem on hearing the news.

Composer Alberto Iglesias was also nominated for the soundtrack of Marc Forster’s The Kite Runner.

The nominations were made public Tuesday, but as to whether there will be an award gala to attend on 24 February remains a mystery, due to the ongoing screenwriters’ strike.
